Highlights
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Andrew Pope's walk-off single gave the Davidson baseball team a 4-3 victory over Furman to complete the three-game sweep Sunday at Wilson Field.
With the game tied at three, Davidson started off its final at bat with a Brian Fortier single to third base before Tyler Agard's sacrificed bunt put pinch runner Max Bazin in scoring position. Back-to-back walks from Nolan Mullen loaded the bases as Furman was forced to make a pitching change. Pope then singled up the middle on Steven Fondu's sixth pitch that brought in Bazin to win the game.
Davidson (10-9) scored four runs off six hits and committed an error, while Furman connected on 10 hits, but left on eight Paladins on base.
Furman (8-11) started the day off scoring in the first inning for the third time over the weekend. After drawing a walk on one out, back-to-back wild pitches put Carter Grote in scoring position before a RBI ground out to shortstop by Jordan Simpson gave the Paladins the 1-0 lead.
Davidson silenced Furman for two-straight innings, before Aaron Tovsky continued his impressive weekend with his third home run of the season that scored three to put the Wildcats up 3-1. Tovsky finished the weekend with eight RBI to bring his overall total to a team-high 13.
Furman rallied for single runs in the fifth and seventh to tie the score at three.
Josh Smutzer (1-1) recorded his first win of the season, allowing only four hits in 3.0 innings in relief. Casey Sutherland started for the Wildcats, allowing two runs - one earned - off six hits with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
Mullen (0-1) recorded the loss for Furman, allowing the winning run off two hits with two walks and four strikeouts for his first loss of the season. Two other Paladins appeared on the mound, including starter Jake Crawford who pitched the first 6.1 innings and allowed three runs off three hits with one strikeout.
Sims Griffith led both teams with a 3-for-4 performance.
The Wildcats will be back in action Tuesday, March 22 with a 6 p.m. first pitch against Iona.
