DAVIDSON, N.C. - Junior Brian Fortier went 4-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored to lead the Davidson baseball team to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Furman Saturday at Wilson Field, which clinched the three-game series heading into Sunday.
The first baseman doubled and later scored for the Wildcats' first run of the ballgame in the second, before three-straight singles for a career-high 4-for-4 performance.
Davidson (9-9) fell behind early as Furman (8-10) scored two runs off three hits in its first at bat. But the Paladins were silenced for five-straight innings prior to a run in the seventh, while the Wildcats rallied for four unanswered runs to secure the ballgame.
In the fourth, Fortier got things going off a single to center field before Tyler Agard singled to right field to put two 'Cats on base with one out. After Will Robertson drew a walk to load the bases, Eric Jones singled up the middle for the freshman's second RBI of the day and tied the score at two. Andrew Pope then sacrificed flied to score Agard as the Wildcats took the 3-2 lead.
Two singles in the fifth, including one from Fortier, brought in an insurance run for Davidson, before Furman tried to spark a rally in the seven with a run off two hits, but it wasn't enough.
Durin O'Linger (2-2) put in a solid performance on the mound, starting the first five innings and allowing two runs off seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.
After appearances from Evan Roberts and Cody White, Westin Whitmire pitched the final 1.1 innings and allowed just one hit for his fourth save of the season.
Matthew Quarles (2-1) recorded the loss for Furman, allowing all four runs off seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 4.1 innings. Harry Norman also appeared, pitching the final 3.2 innings in relief.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow, March 20 with a 1 p.m. first pitch at Wilson Field.
