DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite a thrilling second frame, Davidson volleyball dropped a 3-1 contest to second-place Rhode Island Friday in Belk Arena, falling by scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-11, 25-16.
The Wildcats slip to 9-15 and 4-6 in Atlantic 10 action, while the Rams improve to 13-9 and 8-2 in A-10. With the win, Rhode Island clinched a spot in the A-10 Championship.
Davidson was led by a pair of six-kill hitters in senior Emily Franklin and junior Kelly Friers, while sophomore Sabrina Shepherd turned in a team-high .300 hitting efficiency, posting five kills.
The Wildcats kept in close in the opening stanza, remaining within four points the entire frame. Two late kills from the Rams sealed the set 21-25.
The 'Cats bounced back in the second set with force, leading by as many as four at one point. Davidson took advantage of its strong blocking game, including a sequence where they regained momentum off of two straight rejections from the duo of Mikayla Derochie and Shepherd. After the Rams battled back to a 23-23 tie, back-to-back kills from Friers and Franklin secured the set 25-23.
Davidson responded sluggishly in Set Three, allowing the Rams to go on separate runs of five, three, three, and seven points to gain a commanding lead early and never let up, taking the frame 25-11.
The Wildcats were unable to respond in the fourth set, as Rhode Island used another set of sequences to secure the set 25-16, and the match 3-1.
Rhode Island was paced by the senior duo of Audrey Castro's 20 kills and Layne Self's 14 kills and match-high .346 hitting percentage.
Davidson returns to action Sunday, welcoming another team of Rams in Fordham for a 1:00 p.m. showdown.
