DAVIDSON, N.C. – After a brief road stint, Davidson volleyball (9-14, 4-5 A-10) returns to Baker Sports Complex for an Atlantic 10 weekend, welcoming Rhode Island and Fordham for Friday and Sunday matchups (7:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m.).
The Wildcats are coming off a split weekend, sweeping George Mason on Friday before falling in straight sets to George Washington Saturday. Despite the recent downtrend, Davidson continues to lead the league in blocking, totaling 255 and averaging 2.87 per set. The squad is ranked sixth overall nationally in total team blocks, and 12th in blocks per set.
Senior captain Emily Franklin continues to have a standout senior campaign, currently ranked fourth in the country with 133 total blocks and 11th with 1.49 blocks per set. She has cracked the Top 10 in all three blocking categories in the Davidson record book (both career and single-season), including a current ranking of third in both career total blocks and block assists.
Friday will be the annual Dig Pink match, a special match volleyball teams across the country host in coordination with the Sideout Foundation and raising awareness for breast cancer. There will be a raffle for the chance to win a set of Beats by Dre headphones as well as a Silent Auction.
Fans can watch both games via the live streaming links provided, and can follow live stats and the @DavidsonVB Twitter account for in-game updates.
LAST TIME OUT
The 'Cats were stumped against George Washington Saturday, as the Colonials swung a season-high .337 hitting percentage. Franklin entered the final frame with a dynamic .700 efficiency, ending the match at .375. Friday, the Wildcats picked up their fourth sweep of the season, led by junior Kelly Friers' 11 kills.
SCOUTING THE RAMS OF RHODE ISLAND
Rhode Island enters the weekend second in the league standings, boasting 12-9, 7-2 A-10 records. The Rams rely on senior outside hitter Audrey Castro for offense, posting a team-high 271 kills (fourth-best in the league), and classmate Layne Self for both offensive and defensive production. Self is second on the squad with 184 kills and a stellar .355 hitting percentage, but tops the team with 92 blocks.
SCOUTING THE RAMS OF FORDHAM
Fordham sits right behind Davidson in A-10 standings, supporting a 10-14, 3-6 record. The Rams last suffered a sweep against Rhode Island, and will face VCU on Friday before battling in Baker Sunday. Fordham is led by potential Rookie of the Year in freshman Olivia Fairchild. The three-time Rookie of the Week winner is first in the league in service aces and second in kills only to NCAA leader Danielle Rygelski (Saint Louis). Fairchild has a team-high 413 kills and 50 aces, and is second on the team with 202 digs.
