
Davidson Falls to Murrary State at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Davidson volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback at the 2015 Winthrop Invitational Friday night, falling to Murray State in straight sets at the Winthrop Coliseum. The defeat came by set scores of 19-25, 19-25 and 11-25.

Freshman Ciera Cockrell paced the offense with seven kills while hitting at a .352 clip. Sabrina Shepherd added four kills and two blocks.

The loss dropped Davidson to 4-7, while Murray State improved to 8-1 overall. The Racers were paced by Taylor Olden and Kristen Besselsen, who each registered 12 kills. Murray State hit .237 on the evening, as Davidson was limited to a .095 percentage.

With the score knotted at 4-4 in the first set, the two programs traded points before a 4-1 run brought Davidson within two, 17-15. The Racers used a 7-3 spurt of its own to finish off the set, 25-19.

Davidson stayed close with Murray State through the midway point of the second set, before the Racers used a 7-3 spurt to pull away for a 25-19 victory.

The Wildcats held a brief 10-8 lead in the third set, but a 14-1 run by Murray State put the Racers out in front, 22-11. Behind the service of Sam Bedard the Racers secured the set, 25-11.

Davidson will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 19 against West Virginia and Winthrop.
