Davidson Downs La Salle in Five Sets

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Davidson volleyball team rallied Saturday night to take a 3-2 win at La Salle, defeating the Explorers by set scores of 25-20, 16-25, 25-19, 31-33, 16-14.Â
Davidson improves to 10-15 overall and 4-7 in the A-10, while La Sall falls to 6-12 overall and 0-11 in league contests.Â
Sabrina Shepherd and Ciera Cockrell paced the Davidson offense with 13 and 11 kills, respectively, while Mason Rooney and Mikayla Derochie chipped in eight strikes apiece. Defensively, Morgan Shannon registered 25 digs. Davidson tallied 12 total blocks, thanks to six blocks from Emily Franklin and Shepherd.Â
La Salle sprinted out to a 6-3 lead before Davidson rallied to move in front 11-9 thanks to kills from Franklin and Shepherd. The Wildcats secured the set 25-20 off a La Salle error. Â
The Explorers once again started the second set off on top, opening a 9-2 lead. Davidson couldn't get things going as La Salle rolled to a 25-16 set victory.
It was all Davidson in the third, sprinting out to a 12-5 lead. Davidson used a 4-2 run down the stretch to put the frame away 25-19 thanks to a kill from Cockrell.Â
Back and fourth action dominated the fourth set, which featured 15 ties and four lead changes. La Salle rallied to even the score 21-21 late in the set, before Davidson opened some breathing room with a 3-0 run, but the Explorers didn't go quietly, as they fended off match point several times before forcing a fifth set with a 33-31 victory.
In the fifth and final set, Davidson opened an 8-5 advantage, before La Salle fought back to even the score, 14-14. The two sides traded points before Davidson put the game away with a 16-14 fifth set victory.Â
The Wildcats return to action Sunday at Duquesne. The match is set for 1 p.m.Â
