Davidson Earns Thrilling Five Set Victory over Rhode Island

DAVIDSON, N.C. –  The Davidson volleyball team and Rhode Island went toe-to-toe Friday night, but it was the Wildcats that prevailed, knocking off the Rams in five sets, 3-2, at John M. Belk Arena. The victory came by set scores of 25-21, 25-21, 24-26, 14-25 and 15-10.

Hannah Rau registered a double double with 12 kills and 13 digs, while Sabrina Shepherd and Mason Rooney registered nine and eight kills, respectively. Rooney dished out 22 helpers with Mikayla Derochie chipping in 21 of her own.

Davidson finished the match with 18 total team blocks, thanks to 10 stops from Emily Franklin. Franklin registered five block assists and five solo blocks, and Shepherd tallied four block assists and two solo blocks. Morgan Shannon had 17 digs.Â

Davidson opened a 4-1 lead to start the first set, before Rhode Island evened the score. The Wildcats responded with a 6-2 run midway through the frame to move ahead, 16-12. Rhody didn't go quietly as the visitors tallied three consecutive points to close the gap, but the 'Cats held on to take the first set, 25-21.

Davidson sprinted out to an 11-6 advantage thanks to three straight kills from Franklin, Rooney and Rau to start the second frame. Rhode Island kept knocking on the door, bringing the score within three, 23-20. Davidson once again held on to secure the set, 25-21.

In the third, Davidson took an early lead, opening with an 8-3 margin. The Wildcats pushed its lead to 18-9 thanks to a 6-2 spurt down the stretch. Rhode Island responded, however, using a 7-1 sprint of its own to close the gap, 21-19 and force a Davidson timeout. Out of the timeout, the two sides traded points before Rhody took the set, 26-24.Â

Rhode Island carried its momentum into the fourth set, opening a 10-4 advantage. The Rams kept things rolling en route to a 25-14 set victory, forcing a fifth and final set.Â

Back and fourth action dominated the deciding set, as the two programs traded points in the early goings. Davidson created some breathing room with a 5-0 run, 9-5. Rhody responded, but it wasn't enough as Davidson took the match with a 15-10 set victory.Â

Davidson returns to the court Sunday to face Fordham at noon. The Wildcats will honor its five graduating seniors prior to the match.
