Davidson Downs Fordham in Straight Sets on Senior Day

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team closed out the 2015 season with a victory over Fordham Sunday afternoon at Belk Arena. The win came by set scores of 25-13, 25-19 and 25-22.

Seniors Gaylen Fronk, Morgan Shannon, Michelle McNeight, Layne Doctson and Hannah Rau were all honored prior to the match for their contributions to the volleyball program.

Davidson (12-16, 7-8 A-10) ended its season on a high note, winning three of its last four matches, including victories over Rhode Island and Fordham this weekend.
Â
Sabrina Shepherd and Emily Franklin, who each registered seven kills on the day, paced the Wildcats' offense. Derochie dished out 16 assists, while Fronk registered a career-high 14 helpers.

Defensively, Shannon and Doctson finished with 13 digs apiece, with Davidson registering 14 total team blocks. Derochie tallied five blocks, while Shepherd and Franklin added four blocks apiece.

With all five seniors getting the start, the Wildcats used a fast start to secure the first frame. Ahead 7-6, Davidson went on a 7-0 run, and never looked back as it secured the set, 25-13.

The second set was a tightly contested battle as Fordham kept pace with the Wildcats throughout. Leading the Rams, Davidson created some breathing room with a 4-1 spurt to push the margin to 20-14. Fordham wouldn't go quietly as the Rams brought the score within three, but the 'Cats held on for a second frame victory, 25-19. Â

Davidson was forced to play from behind in the third set, as the Rams opened a 5-1 advantage. The Wildcats responded to even the score at 10, thanks to a kill from Derochie, but Fordham had an answer and scored three straight points to move ahead, 13-10. The two sides traded points down the stretch, and with the score knotted at 22 late in the set, the Wildcats got a block from Cockrell and a kill from Rooney to claim the win, 25-22.Â
