Davidson Tripped Up at VCU, 3-0

RICHMOND, Va. - The Davidson volleyball team suffered an Atlantic 10 setback Saturday afternoon, falling to VCU in straight sets at the Siegel Center. The defeat came by set scores of 25-11, 25-22 and 25-15.

Sabrina Shepherd paced the Davidson (9-15, 3-7 A-10) offense with six kills. Emily Franklin chipped in five kills, while Ciera Cockrell had four strikes. Mason Rooney had nine assists, with Mikayla Derochie adding eight helpers. Defensively, Franklin had three blocks, while Derochie registered six digs.

The Rams (11-14, 5-5 A-10) were paced by Kalah Jones' 16 kills. Sahbria McLetchie chipped in nine kills, while VCU registered a .276 hitting percentage. Defensively, the Rams tallied 10 total team blocks, thanks to six blocks from Tori Baldwin.

VCU sprinted out to 12-2 lead to open the first set. The Rams used a 5-0 run late in the frame to extend their lead, 21-5, and secure a first set win, 25-11.

Back and fourth action dominated the second set, which featured 10 ties and two lead changes. Trailing at the midway point, Davidson used a 6-1 run to create some breathing room, 20-17. VCU responded with a 5-0 run of its own en route to a 25-22 second-set victory.

VCU kept its momentum going into the third set, opening a 9-2 advantage. The Rams extended their advantage to 17-7, thanks in part to a 7-2 spurt. VCU took the set, 25-15.

Davidson will next visit La Salle and Duquesne, Nov. 6 and 8.
