Davidson Sweeps La Salle in Key A-10 Match

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team routed La Salle Sunday afternoon, 3-0, to pick up a key win in conference play. The victory came by set scores of 25-22, 25-20 and 25-10.

The Wildcats improve to 9-14 overall and 3-6 in conference play, while La Salle falls to 6-20 overall and 0-9 in A-10 contests.

Davidson benefited from a balanced attack in the victory with Sabrina Shepherd's nine kills and .615 hitting percentage leading the way. Mikayla Derochie and Ciera Cockrell added six kills apiece with Mason Rooney and Sarah Fink chipping in five strikes each.

The Wildcats were a force on the defensive side of the net, recording 10 total blocks. Shepherd finished with two solos and two assists, while Fink added two blocks of her own. Layne Doctson and Rooney recorded six digs.

After trading points to open the first set, Davidson used a 7-0 sprint to create some breathing room, 15-8. La Salle didn't go quietly though, as the Explorers registered four consecutive points to bring the score within three, 18-15. Back and fourth action dominated late in the set, but Davidson held on for a 25-22 set win thanks to kills from Shepherd and Derochie.

It was all Davidson in the second set, as the Wildcats opened up a 6-0 advantage behind the service of Rooney. Fink tallied four kills midway through to extend Davidson's lead, 13-5. La Salle rallied down the stretch using a 6-2 spurt to close its deficit, 22-20 and force a Davidson timeout. Out of the timeout, the Wildcats earned three consecutive points to secure the set, 25-20.

Davidson carried its momentum into the third set, racing out to an 18-3 lead en route to a 25-10 set victory. Mikayla Derochie registered three kills and an ace in the frame, while Shepherd had two strikes.

Davidson returns to action next week as it visits VCU. The Wildcats will take to the court on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 4 p.m.
