Shepherd, Franklin Can't Lift 'Cats Past Duquesne

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sabrina Shepherd registered a career-high 18 kills as the Davidson volleyball team fell to Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne, 3-1, Friday night at Belk Arena. The defeat came by set scores of 22-25, 26-24, 24-26 and 15-25.

Shepherd dominated the middle, registering a match-high 18 strikes to go along with a career-high .680 hitting percentage. The Cave Spring, Ark., native also tallied six block assists and a block solo.

Emily Franklin chipped in 11 kills and a .524 hitting percentage, while registering three block assists. Defensively, Kylie Bishopp turned in 12 digs, while Layne Doctson and Hannah Rau each added nine. Mason Rooney and Mikayla Derochie totaled 17 and 23 assists, respectively.

The Wildcats opened a 12-6 lead midway through the opening set, before Duquesne used a 6-1 spurt to bring the score within one, 13-12. Duquesne kept its momentum going as the Dukes moved in front, 20-17, thanks to an 8-4 stretch. Despite four consecutive points for the Wildcats late in the frame, Duquesne's Lacey Lever put the set away with a kill, 25-22.Â

Back and fourth action dominated the second set, which featured 11 ties and three lead changes. After opening with a 4-0 advantage, Duquesne extended its lead to, 12-7, thanks to kills from Nora Young and Molly Davet. Davidson kept things close and eventually evened the score, 13-13. The two sides traded points down the stretch, before consecutive kills from Shepherd put the Wildcats in front, 24-22. Two blocks assists from Derochie and Shepherd secured the set, 26-24, and evened the match 1-1.

Davidson was forced to play from behind in the third set, as Duquesne opened with a 9-2 advantage. The Wildcats kept battling and eventually evened the score at 17, thanks to kills from Franklin. The two sides traded points down the stretch, but Duquesne recorded three kills to take the frame, 26-24.

It was all Duquesne in the fourth set, as the Dukes raced out to a 16-9 lead before taking the set and match, 25-15.

Davidson returns to action Sunday, Oct. 25 as the Wildcats host La Salle at 1 p.m.Â
