ST. LOUIS, Mo.
- The Davidson volleyball team jumped out to an early lead, but could not hold on as it fell at Saint Louis Sunday afternoon, 3-1. The defeat came by set scores of 25-23, 14-25, 13-25 and 21-25.

Kelly Friers controlled the offense for Davidson (8-13, 2-5 A-10), finishing the afternoon with a team-high 10 kills, a .273 hitting percentage and five digs. Mikayla Derochie just missed a double-double with nine kills and 14 assists. Derochie hit .375 on the day. Ciera Cockrell registered seven kills and Sabrina Shepherd chipped in six strikes of her own.

Morgan Shannon added 28 digs with Mason Rooney totaling 23 assists. Davidson registered six total team blocks thanks to two solo blocks and three block assists from Emily Franklin and two blocks assists from Rooney.

Saint Louis (18-6, 7-1 A-10) was paced by Danielle Rygelski's 15 kills and 11 digs, to go with a double-double from Nenye Okoro (11 kills, 15 digs). Meredith Boe dished out 44 assists, while Katia Haak and Mackenzie Long registered 10 and 11 digs, respectively. Saint Louis registered eight total team blocks thanks to Gilbert's four block assists and three from Lauren Leverenz.

Davidson sprinted out to a 5-1 lead in the first frame thanks to a service ace from Derochie and kills from Friers and Kylie Bishopp. Back and fourth action dominated the remainder of the set, which featured 11 tied scores and four lead changes. Tied at 17, Davidson went on a 3-0 run to create some breathing room, 20-17. Kills from Friers and Shepherd moved the score to 22-19 before a Rooney strike put the set away, 25-23.

The Wildcats kept things close early in the second frame, but the Billikens used an 8-1 sprint midway through to create an, 18-9 advantage. Saint Louis went on to secure the set, 25-14, and gain momentum heading into the third.

It was all Saint Louis in the third, opening an 18-10 advantage. The Billikens scored five consecutive points for a 24-11 margin. Davidson tried to rally, fending off match point twice before ultimately falling, 25-13.

Davidson was forced to play from behind in the fourth set after the Billikens opened an 11-5 advantage. The Wildcats pulled within three, 15-12, but Saint Louis rallied with a 6-2 spurt. Davidson didn't go quietly though, using a 3-0 spurt of its own to cut its deficit, 21-17, but Saint Louis held on for the 25-21 set victory.

Davidson returns to the friendly confines of Belk Arena Oct. 23-25 with matches against Atlantic 10 rivals Duquesne and La Salle. The Wildcats and Dukes will face off Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. Davidson and La Salle will meet Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.
