DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson men's soccer team will look to continue their undefeated start to the season as they host the annual Davidson adidas Classic with matches against Detroit (Friday, 7:15 p.m.) and Gardner-Webb (Sunday, 7:15 p.m.)

Competitors on the field, all of the participants will be thinking about more than soccer though, as Mountaineers' head coach Shaun Pendleton, age 49, was found dead in his home Tuesday. Coach Matt Nelson will be the acting head coach for the remainder of the season. The Appalachian State players voted on Wednesday to play in this weekend's games. SCOUTING THE WILDCATS: Davidson (1-0-1) Has not allowed a goal in the first two games of the season, and they will look for a similar defensive effort in their first two home matches of the season. GK Chip Sanders made five saves total in earning the two shutouts. D Greg Macnamara played exemplary defense in both matches. MFBrian McGue has led the 'Cats offensively with a goal and an assist. Freshman F Gabe Rivera notched a goal in his first collegiate game against Air Force, and earned a start against No. 19 Denver.
SCOUTING THE TITANS: Coming off of a 1-0 loss in overtime to Buffalo, Horizon League member Detorit is looking to improve on their 2-1 record (0-0 in the Horizontal Conference). The Titans opened their season with a defeat of No. 19 Michigan State 1-0 in overtime, and followed with a win over St. Joseph's, 5-2. Six different players have scored this season. After they play the Wildcats Friday, the Titans face Appalachian State Sunday.
SCOUTING THE RUNNIN' BULLDOGS: Gardner-Webb 1-1-1 thus far this season and are 0-1-1 in neutral site contests. GWU is also 0-1-1 against the Southern Conference thus far this season with a 2-1 loss to Wofford and a 1-1 double-overtime draw with Georgia Southern. GWU's lone win came at home versus Brevard.

(Sept. 18, 2010) – Senior midfielder Alex Caskey scored the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute to give Davidson a 1-0, overtime-win over Gardner-Webb Friday evening at Greene-Harbison Field. A strong defensive effort kept the Wildcats in position to win. Junior goalkeeper Chip Sanders earned his second shutout of the season, making four saves, while the 'Cats defensive unit yielded just eight shots.
LAST TIME OUT: Davidson's defense turned in another strong performance, battling to a 0-0 draw with No. 19 Denver in non-conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. Davidson nearly scored in the opening seconds of the game off the kickoff after junior Brian McGue won the header on a long ball into the box. He directed it to classmate Andrew DiLallo, but his volley went just high. DiLallo and McGue nearly connected again off a long ball later in the first half, but the shot went just wide. Freshman Gabe Rivera attempted a bicycle kick on a scoring chance midway through the second half, but Denver goalkeeper Oliver Brown was there to make the save. Brown finished the game with two saves.
8TH IN THE NSCAA SOUTH: After posting an undefeated opening weekend, Davidson moved into the NSCAA/Continental Tire South Region Rankings Tuesday, tying with Duke for eighth. Four Southern Conference teams populate the 10-team list. UNCG is fourth, Furman is fifth, and College of Charleston ranks in seventh, just ahead of Davidson and Duke. North Carolina, ranked No. 1 in the nation, leads the region and three other ACC teams on the list.
STINGY DEFENSE: Davidson has yet to allow a goal in the first two games of the 2011 season after opening with a 2-0 win at Air Force and following with a 0-0 draw at No. 19 Denver. The last time the Wildcats opened the season with back-to-back shutouts was in 1999.
MOVING UP: Senior GK Chip Sanders needed to make just one save against Denver (0-1-1) to earn his 10th career shutout and tie Mike Iordanou (1977-81) for fifth all-time in the category at Davidson.

LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE: Last weekend's thunderstorms, which affected sporting events all across the country, impacted both the Davidson men's and women's soccer games on Sept. 2. The men's team dealt with a 90-minute delay at halftime at Air Force, while the women's team saw their kickoff get delayed an hour and 45 minutes.
GOING THE DISTANCE: After having not one tie in 2009, Davidson had six in 2010, going 1-0-6 in seven overtime games, including two that were scoreless. The 'Cats have not lost an overtime game since 2009 (Oct. 10 at Elon, 1-2), and are 3-1-7 in overtime the past three seasons.
LOWE'S SENIOR CLASS AWARD: Davidson senior defender and tri-captain Greg Macnamara was one of 30 NCAA men's soccer student-athletes named as a candidate for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in collegiate men's soccer. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
SCHEDULE CHANGE: The Davidson men's soccer match against No. 1 North Carolina has been rescheduled for Monday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. in Alumni Stadium. The inauguration of new Davidson College President Carol Quillen was also slated for Tuesday, Oct. 18, thus the match was moved a day sooner to better accommodate the ceremonies.
