STATESBORO, Ga. -- Moriah Bellissimo's double-double of a match-high 12 kills and 10 digs led the Georgia Southern Eagles to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-13) win over the Davidson Wildcats Tuesday night in SoCon volleyball action in Hanner Fieldhouse.
Bellissimo was the only hitter to finish with double digits and one of four Eagles to tally double-digit digs, as Georgia Southern improved to 23-8 overall and 13-2 in the conference. Kate Van Dyke, who also led the defense with 13 digs, just missed a triple-double with eight kills and 37 assists. Hannah Nelson also had eight kills, while Ashley Roe and Hayli Ketner finished with 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
Freshman outside hitter Caroline Brown tied a career-high with nine kills on just 19 swings to lead Davidson (16-16, 7-8). Senior outside hitter Sarabeth Peele added seven kills, and senior setter Hayley Lawson turned in a double-double with 22 assists and 12 digs. Senior libero Jennifer Chamblee led the defense with 13 digs.
Georgia Southern took a 13-4 lead, opening a 4-4 tie by winning 10 straight, including three kills from Leah Kettleson and a pair each by Nelson and Bethany Sanford. After getting down 18-8, the Wildcats battled back to cut the Eagles' lead to just three, 21-18, with a 10-3 run of their own. A kill from sophomore Molly Crenshaw held the margin, 22-19, but Van Dyke put two down to give Georgia Southern a set-point. The Wildcats fought off three straight set points before Van Dyke's fourth kill of the match delivered the 25-22 win for the Eagles.
The Eagles opened the second set with a 7-2 run but the Wildcats again fought back. Davidson got within a point, 9-8, with three straight points on a kills from Peele and Brown and an ace by Chamblee. Georgia Southern followed with an 8-2 spurt that opened up a 17-10 lead, but the Wildcats once again battled back. Trailing 22-15, Davidson scored four straight on a pair of kills from Brown and another Chamblee ace to cut the Eagles' lead to 22-19. A kill by Lupfer again kept the margin at three points, before Van Dyke gave Georgia Southern another set-point opportunity. A service error gave the possession back to Davidson, but a Wildcat error gave Georgia Southern a 25-21 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Georgia Southern busted open a one-point game with a 11-3 run to grab a 15-8 lead in the final set. The Eagles closed out the match with an 8-2 run, including the last four points, to win the match with the 25-13 victory.
Davidson will finish out the regular season when it travels to Chattanooga Saturday for a 6 p.m. match. The 2010 SoCon Tournament opens in Boone on November 19.
