Chattanooga Defeats Davidson, 3-1, in SoCon Regular Season Finale

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- With four hitters in double figures, the Chattanooga Mocs defeated the Davidson Wildcats, 3-1, in the SoCon regular-season finale Saturday night at Maclellan Gym.

Jessica Scott led Chattanooga (12-20, 7-9) with 14 kills. Heather Parman had 11 kills, and Courtney Barmes and Meagan Ernd each added 10. Bailee Chastain led the Mocs with 40 assists, and Paula Passmore paced the defense with 19 digs. Chastain and Parham also turned in double digits in digs with 14 and 13, respectively.

Senior outside hitter Sarabeth Peele led Davidson (16-17, 7-9) with 11 kills, and senior middle blocker Jorden Benedict added eight. Senior setter Hayley Lawson finished with 34 assists, and sophomore Molly Crenshaw and junior Christine Perzinski each had 14 digs.

Davidson opened the match with a 4-2 run, but Chattanooga fought back to knot the game at seven before rattling off five straight to take a 12-7 lead on a Passmore ace. Davidson stayed in the set, trailing just four at 15-11, until the Mocs used a 6-0 run to open a 21-11 lead en route to the 25-14 win.

Chattanooga took control of the second set, busting open a 10-10 tie with a 4-0 run. A Moc hitting error put Davidson within three, 16-13, but the 'Cats couldn't get closer in the set and Chattanooga used another 4-0 spurt to jump ahead, 22-16. The Mocs closed with three straight, including a kill from Jessica Scott and a pair of Wildcat errors, to take a 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-18 win.

The Wildcats roared to a 7-3 lead after the break, but the Mocs knotted the set at nine with a 6-2 run of their own. Davidson won the next four, including kills from Benedict and junior Erin Lupfer to pull ahead, 13-9, and held the margin the rest of the way. Chattanooga got within a pair, 17-15, on a 3-0 run with kills by Ellie Kuhn and Scott, but the Wildcats took the next three to reclaim the 20-15 lead. The Wildcats went on for the 25-18 win on a score from freshman Caroline Brown and two kills from Benedict.

Chattanooga won the first four points of the final set, but Davidson answered to tie things at 4-4 on a kill from Peele. The teams battled the rest of the way with the score tied three times and Davidson trailing just one as late as 16-15, before the Mocs closed the set with a 9-2 run to win the match with the 25-17 win.

The Wildcats will now turn their action to the 2010 SoCon Tournament, which opens in Boone, N.C., Friday, Nov. 19.
