MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Sean Flatley's goal in the sixth minute proved to be the difference, as College of Charleston defeated Davidson, 1-0, in Southern Conference men's soccer action Saturday evening at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium.
Ralphie Lundy sent a free kick into the box from 30 yards out, and Flatley kicked it in off the crossbar at 5:33 to give CofC (6-2-1, 1-0 SoCon) the win. Senior midfielder Alex Caskey (Dunwoody, Ga.) led Davidson (4-3-3, 0-2 SoCon) with two shots.
“College of Charleston is a very good team, as their seven-game unbeaten streak suggests,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “Today they played with a high level of intensity and conviction. It's unfortunate that a goal off a set piece cost us for the second game in a row.”
Sophomore George Ramsay (Atlanta, Ga.) had an opportunity to equalize the game in the first half after junior Hunter Hayes (Peachtree City, Ga.) found him with a cross in front of the net, but his header was off the mark. Freshman Jake Keator (Jacksonville, Fla.) had a pair of opportunities barely thwarted on through-balls. Senior Josh Zipin (Silver Spring, Md.) had an opportunity in front, but was unable to volley it in.
Davidson came out stronger in the second half, but was unable to crack the Cougars' defense. Sophomore Peter Paras (Dublin, Ohio) had a shot from 25 yards out on goal get deflected over the crossbar by the goalkeeper.
“We showed more energy in the second half, but Charleston's defense held strong,” said Spear.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chip Sanders (Thomasville, Ga.) made eight saves, while his counterpart, Kees Heemskerk, made three saves to earn the shutout. Davidson was also credited with a defensive save.
“Chip made some great saves for us to keep the game within reach,” added Spear.
The match was the first of four-straight on the road for Davidson. They will face No. 6 Duke Tuesday at 7 p.m., defending Southern Conference Champion Wofford live on Fox Soccer Channel Friday, Oct. 8. at 8 p.m. and SoCon foe Furman Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats will next play at home in Alumni Stadium Saturday, Oct. 16 when they host UNCG at 7 p.m.
Notes: The loss was Davidson's first of the season to a team not ranked in the Top 25 nationally … CofC head coach Ralph Lundy was honored before the game after notching his 400th career win over No. 19 Wake Forest on Sept. 21 … Davidson coach Kevin O'Brien played for Lundy, graduating from CofC in 1996.
