With the first set knotted at 10, Davidson opened a slight 13-11 lead on a pair of kills by Peele, but Elon used a 6-1 run to go ahead 17-14. The Wildcats answered with five straight scores, including a kill by sophomore Erin Lupfer and two aces from Bradbury, to pull ahead 19-17, but the Phoenix won the next three to pull ahead by a score. Sophomore Madison Benedict tied the score at 20, before Elon finished with a 5-1 spurt to take the set, 25-21.
Elon converted an early 4-2 advantage into a 15-10 lead and controlled the second set for the duration. The Wildcats fought off a pair of set points, but Sarah Schermerhorn punched home the winner in the 25-18 victory to give the Phoenix a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 6-2 lead to begin the third set behind a pair of Jorden Benedict kills and four Elon errors. A kill by Madison Benedict and a Crenshaw ace put Davidson back ahead, 23-22, but Lemke and Copenhagen gave the Phoenix a match-point chance. The Wildcats survived on a kill by Jorden Benedict to even the set at 24, but Copenhagen regained the advantage for Elon. Peele helped Davidson survive a second match point, but they would not survive another, as a Wildcat error followed a Copenhagen kill for the 27-25 Phoenix win.
Davidson will return to Belk Arena to host Western Carolina at 7 p.m. Friday night, in the first of four straight home matches. The Wildcats will also host Appalachian State Sunday at 2 p.m.
