DAVIDSON, N.C. -- With three hitters in double figures and a near triple-double by junior setter Hayley Lawson, the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to claim a dramatic 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-11) win over the Western Carolina Catamounts Friday night in Southern Conference action at Belk Arena.

Lawson led Davidson (5-20, 2-7) with 43 assists, 10 digs and eight kills. She finished with a career-high .583 clip (8-1-12) and equaled her career-high with eight kills, last recorded against Georgia Southern on Nov. 11, 2007.

The Southern Conference kills leader, junior Sarabeth Peele added 20 to her tally, to go along with 15 digs in the double-double effort. Madison and Jorden Benedict also touched double figures for the 'Cats, totaling 11 and 10 kills, respectively, and freshman Molly Crenshaw contributed a career-high 27 digs.

For Western Carolina (3-20, 0-9), Paloma Alvarez collected 14 kills, and Rebecca Stoltz added 12. Setter Katie Hennessey finished with 43 assists and a team-high 15 digs, and Amanda Chaparro also had 15 digs.

Davidson won the opening frame, 25-20, after jumping out to an early 8-3 lead. Western knotted the game at nine behind a 6-1 rally, but the Wildcats answered with a 7-2 run to reclaim a 17-13 advantage and hold the lead for good.

The Catamounts won the second set, 25-20, to knot the match. After trading points early, the Catamounts took a slight 9-6 lead that proved to be enough. Western extended its lead to 23-15, and a late 5-2 Wildcat run would come too late.

The Wildcats missed an opportunity in the third set after winning the first five points, before a 14-5 Western run turned a 9-3 Davidson lead into a 17-14 deficit. Alvarez tallied five kills in the set, three in that interval, to lift the Catamounts to a 2-1 lead in the match.

After controlling things early, Davidson had to fend off another Western rally in the fourth set. With six kills from Peele and a pair from sophomore Christine Perzinski, the Wildcats went up 14-9, but Western took a 16-15 lead with a 7-1 run. An Alvarez service error tied the set, and the Wildcats took advantage in the do-or-die situation. With the set evened at 17, Davidson rattled off four straight, including kills from sophomore Erin Lupfer, Lawson and Madison Benedict, to go ahead 20-17. The three-point cushion was enough to force the fifth game as the Wildcats won five of the last eight points in the 25-20 win.

The fifth set was all Wildcats, as Davidson took a commanding 10-4 lead in the abbreviated period. Western, though, made some noise to close to 12-9 on a 5-2 run when Lawson left the match with an injury. In the pivotal moment, freshman Ariel Ley took over the setting duties and connected with Perzinski and Peele, and the Wildcats won the match point on a service error by Chaparro.

Davidson will return to action Sunday, hosting the Appalachian State Mountaineers (9-13, 5-3) at 2 p.m. at Belk Arena. The Mountaineers travel to Georgia Southern for a 2 p.m. match Saturday before continuing to Davidson.
