Davidson opened up a 13-6 lead to begin match play, including a pair of kills from Peele, Jorden Benedict, Madison Benedict and Perzinski, but Georgia Southern chipped away steadily until finally taking the 25-22 win. The Wildcats controlled play through most of the set, extending their lead to 18-12 before the Eagles rallied. Georgia Southern closed with a 5-1 run, including three kills from Sanford, to steal the 25-22 victory in the set.
The Eagles busted open what was a closely contested frame with a late 7-0 run to win the second set by a misleading 25-16 margin. The teams were tied at 12 until a 3-0 spurt gave Georgia Southern a slight edge, but Davidson stayed in the match, 16-14, behind a kill from sophomore Erin Lupfer and a service ace from Jorden Benedict. From that point, the Eagles pulled away with a 9-2 run, including winning seven straight, to take the 25-16 win and a 2-0 edge in the match.
The third and final set was knotted at six early, until the Eagles pulled ahead 14-9 behind an 8-3 run. Davidson stayed within three points the rest of the way, but could never recover, and Georgia Southern finished the match by winning the last four points in the 25-18 win.
Davidson will continue its road swing with trips to UNC Greensboro and Elon this weekend. The Wildcats will face the Spartans at 2 p.m. Saturday, before taking on the Phoenix at 2 p.m. Sunday.
