GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The UNCG Spartans shut out the Davidson Wildcat, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-14), on Saturday afternoon in Southern Conference volleyball action at Fleming Gymnasium.

Davidson (4-19, 1-6) was led by Sarabeth Peele with seven kills, and sophomores Erin Lupfer and Madison Benedict each contributed six. Sophomore Hayley Lawson tallied 13 assists, and freshman Molly Crenshaw led the defense with 15 digs.

For Greensboro (12-9, 4-2), Caley Redden posted 10 kills. Ari Lysacek posted 27 assists, and Catherine Hanners totaled a match-high 20 digs.

Greensboro opened the match with an 8-3 run that would prove enough to outlast a late Wildcat rally in the first set. The Wildcats pulled within 19-17 on a kill from Lupfer, coupled with a pair of UNCG errors to force the Spartans into a timeout. Greensboro, though, closed with a 6-3 spurt to secure the 25-20 win in the opening set.

The Spartans won the first four points to start the second frame and extended their lead to 8-4 before the Wildcats started to attack. Trailing 9-5, Davidson won five straight points to take a 10-9 lead, and the Spartans took a timeout. After the break, the 'Cats put together a 6-1 stretch to push their lead to 16-10, when Greensboro began its rally. With Davidson ahead 18-14, the Spartans rattled off four straight scores to tie the set, and the teams traded points for the next few possessions. With the set tied at 21, Greensboro got back-to-back kills to take a 23-21 lead, and though the Wildcats would win the next point on a Spartan error, a pair of Davidson errors would deliver the 25-22 win.

Greensboro opened the third set in a similar way, taking an early 5-0 lead before Davidson fought back. The Wildcats closed to within a point, 7-6, on a pair of Spartan errors, a kill from sophomore Christine Perzinski and a service ace by Crenshaw, but Greensboro busted the set open with a 9-0 run to pull ahead 16-6 and go on to win the match with the 25-14 victory.

Davidson will return to action tomorrow, facing Southern Conference foe Elon at 2 p.m.
