DAVIDSON, N.C. – The 21st-ranked Davidson men's soccer team will be looking to regain the Southern Conference lead by adding a win over Appalachian State on Wednesday night in the first of two important conference matches this week. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Alumni Stadium.
For those who can't make it to the field, the match will be broadcast on live video with live audio commentary, along with live stats throughout the contest.
Scouting the Wildcats: Davidson (9-2, 2-1 SoCon) earned a No. 21 ranking from Soccer America on Monday after defeating No. 6 Duke, 4-1 on Tuesday. Junior Yannick Pilgrim scored two goals, including the game-winner, and earned Southern Conference Player of the Week honors, as well as a spot on Soccer America's Team of the Week.
Davidson boasts the fourth-best scoring offense in the country and also leads the Southern Conference with an average of 2.55 goals per game. Senior F Charlie Reiter leads the SoCon with 23 points (8 goals, 7 assists) to rank sixth nationally in points per game. He is followed by Pilgrim with 18 points (7g, 4a), good for a 16th-place ranking in the same category. Junior MF Alex Caskey is tied for fourth in the conference with 14 points (6g, 2a).
However, a loss to Elon (3-0 SoCon) on Saturday dropped Davidson out of the top spot in the conference. Sophomore goalkeeper Chip Sanders made a career-high eight saves in the match and now has a 1.26 goals against average with 35 saves in 11 matches. Wednesday's match versus ASU is the first of four remaining conference contests for the Wildcats.
Scouting the Mountaineers: Appalachian State (3-7-1, 0-3 SoCon) enters the match on a three-match losing streak, all to conference opponents (Wofford, Elon and Furman). Arie Muniz is among the conference scoring leaders with 12 points (5 goals, 2 assists). J.J. Elder has scored the only Appalachian goal in the last three games when he headed in a pass from Muniz in the 3-1 loss to Furman. Goalkeeper Collin Taylor has started the last two matches and has a 1.73 goals against average with 25 saves in seven games played.
The Series: Davidson trails in the all-time series with a 23-27-4 record. The Wildcats fell 2-1 in Boone, N.C. last season, played to 1-1 draws in 2006 and 2007, and last won in 2005, 2-1 at home.
