DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Sarah Havel led the College of Charleston Cougars past the Davidson Wildcats, 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-20), in Southern Conference volleyball action Sunday afternoon at Belk Arena.

Havel tallied 10 kills on 19 attempts to lead Charleston (8-10, 4-2), who hit .407 as a team and recorded nine team blocks. Whitney Russell added nine kills on 16 swings, and setter Cole Dawley had six on eight attempts to go along with 35 assists, nine digs and five blocks. Paige Johnson led the Cougar defense with 11 digs.

Junior Sarabeth Peele paced Davidson (4-17, 1-4) once again with 14 kills, and sophomores Madison Benedict and Erin Lupfer each added seven. Setter Anna Bradbury dished out 32 assists, and freshman Molly Crenshaw contributed eight digs to lead the defense.

The Cougars took a 6-3 lead to open the first set, but Davidson battled back to knot the score at seven behind a pair of kills from Peele, a putaway by Madison Benedict and a Bradbury service ace. The Cougars started to pull away with a 7-2 run to open a 14-9 lead and controlled the set the rest of the way, winning the last four points for the 25-15 win.

The second set featured 12 ties and three lead changes, with the result coming down to the final points. Tied at eight, CofC won four straight points on kills by Dawley and Havel to take a 12-8 lead, but Davidson answered with a 7-1 run to go ahead one, 14-13. Ginny Phillips won the next point for the Cougars, and the teams traded points for the next several possessions until a Havel putaway paired with a ball handling error by Bradbury gave Charleston a 20-18 edge.

The Cougars held the margin when Peele put the 'Cats within a point, 22-21. A Wildcat hitting error gave the Cougars a point, but Lupfer got it back for Davidson. Whitney Russell took care of a pass from Dawley to give Charleston a set point opportunity, but Phillips' serve missed. Elyse Chubbs won the final point of the set to lift Charleston to a 25-23 win and a 2-0 edge in the match.

The teams traded points to open the third set until Lawson's second kill gave Davidson a 7-6 advantage. Charleston won five straight to grab a 12-8 lead and controlled the set until a 4-1 Wildcat run cut the lead to 19-17. Charleston, though, closed with a 5-2 spurt to win the match with the 25-20 victory.

Davidson returns to action, traveling to Southern Conference-foe Georgia Southern for a 6 p.m. match Tuesday evening.
