DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Bethany Sanford recorded 12 kills to lead the Georgia Southern Eagles to a 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-15) win over the Davidson Wildcats in both team's Southern Conference opener on Wednesday night at Belk Arena.
With the loss, Davidson falls to 4-9 overall and 0-1 in league action, while Georgia Southern moves to 7-8 and 1-0 in conference play.
Davidson was led by senior middle blocker Kittery Neale, who contributed 12 kills, hit .333 (12-4-24) and paced the defense with seven digs. Sophomore outside hitter Sarabeth Peele had 10 kills, the only other player in double figures, and freshman Madison Benedict added nine kills and a block to the effort.
For the Eagles, Christy Dowd (8 kills) and Michelle Uzoh (7) complemented Sanford, as the Eagles hit .330 as a team. Parker Small and Hannah Nelson each had four blocks, while Blaire Brueggemeyer led all players with 15 digs.
Neale earned the first point of the match, on a putaway from sophomore setter Hayley Lawson, and the 'Cats jumped out to an early 7-3 lead. Freshman Christine Perzinski posted her first of five kills in the match, and Lawson aced her serve to push Davidson's lead to 10-5. The Eagles put together a 7-4 run to knot the score at 14 on a Wildcat hitting error, but the 'Cats regained the lead in the next possession on a putaway from Perzinski. The teams would trade points for the next two possessions and be tied as late as 20-20. The Eagles would win the next four straight, on kills from Sarah Gildersleeve and Uzoh, before Dowd lifted her team to a 25-21 comeback win.
The second set was a similar story, though it was the Eagles who took the early, slight lead, 9-6. The 'Cats used a 4-1 run, punctuated by Neale, to knot the score at 10, but the Eagles took four straight points and a 15-11 lead. After a couple of timeouts, the Wildcats stayed in the game, as a kill from Peele evened play at 23-23. Hannah Nelson would win the Eagles a set-point opportunity, but a service error from teammate Brueggemeyer forced the extra possessions with the score tied at 24. Uzoh posted back-to-back kills to capture the 26-24 win and give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage in the match.
In the final set, Georgia Southern took a 9-2 lead and turned in into a 25-15 win for the match. Davidson will return to action on Saturday, hosting the newest member of the league, Samford, in a 2 p.m. match. The 'Cats will then host SoCon rival Chattanooga the following afternoon at 2 p.m.
