Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. -- The Wildcats gave the league-leading Samford a battle, but the Bulldogs proved too much, taking a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-15) decision Sunday afternoon in SoCon volleyball action at the Pete Hanna Center.

Ashley Adams was the lone player in double figures on either side, finishing with 14 kills on 31 attacks to lead the Bulldogs, who improved to 24-3 overall and 13-1 in the conference.

Davidson got eight kills from sophomore outside hitter Sarabeth Peele and seven from freshman Christine Perzinski, but falls to 11-16 overall and 6-8 in the league with the loss.

Davidson took control of the first set early, leading 10-6 and forcing the Bulldogs into a timeout. The Wildcats pushed their lead to 13-8 when Samford started clawing back in behind a 5-2 stretch and the serving of Samantha Bland to make it 15-13. The Wildcats were still leading 18-14 when the Bulldogs made a 2-1 run and tied the score at 19-19 with three straight scores as Hillary Fountain served a pair. The 'Cats regained the lead on Fountain's serving error, but Adams tied the score again. A Kittery Neale putaway put the 'Cats up, 21-20, but the Bulldogs got three straight points to take a 23-21 lead and went on for the 25-23 win.

Samford earned a 2-0 advantage to open the second set, but couldn't shake the Wildcats, who knotted the game at 7-7 behind a 4-0 run and a three-point serve from Peele. Davidson took a momentary lead on a kill from freshman Madison Benedict, but Samford would win the next three to move to a 10-8 lead. The 'Cats would win the next two to even the score again, and then with the set tied at 14-14, Neale would again put the Wildcats on top, but the Bulldogs would win three straight in what became the story of the set. Each time the 'Cats, always trailing from that point, would begin to chip away, Samford would answer until with the game tied at 22-22, the Bulldogs would close with a 3-1 win for the 25-23 decision.

The third set was competitive early, until with the score knotted at 7-7, the Bulldogs scored eight straight to take a 15-7 lead and went on to win the match with the 25-15 margin.

Davidson will return to Belk Arena this weekend, hosting a pair of conference opponents in the College of Charleston and The Citadel. The Wildcats will host the "Dig for the Cure" Event against Charleston at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
