Despite Peele's Match-High 21 Kills, Cats Drop 3-1 Decision at Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, TENN. -- Despite a match-high 21 kills from sophomore outside hitter Sarabeth Peele, the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 18-25, 27-25) decision at Chattanooga Saturday afternoon in SoCon action at Maclellan Gym.
Peele hit .415 (21-4-41) on the afternoon and added eight digs, three blocks, an ace and a pair of assists to the effort. Senior middle blocker Kittery Neale finished with 10 kills. Sophomore setter Hayley Lawson posted 43 assists, and classmate Jennifer Chamblee led the defense with 30 digs.
Chattanooga had a pair of hitters in double figures, led by Aurore Kullak with 15 kills and 14 digs. Courtney Barnes finished with 10 kills and six blocks, while Michaela Huff had 38 assists. Lara Newberry had a team-high 29 digs, and Ashley Yeager was the third Moc in double figures in digs with 10.
With the loss, Davidson falls to 11-15 overall and 6-7 in SoCon action, while Chattanooga improves to 14-13 and 9-4 in the league.
The Wildcats got down 12-9 in the first set, but fought back to tie the game at 13 behind a 4-1 run and the serving of sophomore Anna Bradbury. The teams traded points, but with the set knotted at 14, a Peele putaway gained possession and she served three straight points to give Davidson a 17-14 lead. A 4-1 Chattanooga run tied the set again at 18, but the Wildcats got back-to-back kills from freshman Jessica McAlvany and Neale to take a two-point lead. Chattanooga, though, answered by winning five straight points to go ahead 23-20 and went on to win the set by a margin of 25-22.
Davidson took an early 6-4 lead and held the margin, 8-6, but the Mocs evened the score at 9-9 with a pair of kills from Nethery and a score by Kullak. The Wildcats went on a 3-1 stretch to go ahead one, 11-10, but an attack error tied things again at 11. From there, Chattanooga would take control of the set, closing with a 14-5 run to pull ahead 2-0 in the match with a 25-16 win.
Davidson took an early 5-2 lead in the third game as Peele, freshman Madison Benedict and Bradbury put together a 3-0 run, and turned it into an 11-6 lead midway through the set. The Wildcats kept coming, taking a commanding 17-9 lead behind a 6-2 run. Peele, Lawson and sophomore Jorden Benedict put the 'Cats ahead 20-10, and Davidson forced a fourth set with a 25-18 win.
In the fourth and final set, Davidson was ahead an early 8-5 before Chattanooga used a 4-0 answer to pull ahead by a score, 9-8. Jorden Benedict got the serve back for Davidson, and Lawson served four straight points to regain the lead, 13-9. The 'Cats would continue to stay on top but see their lead shrink to 17-14 before a 3-0 run would tie the set at 17-17. The teams would trade scores, until at 22-22, a Wildcat service error and a kill from Michaela Huff gave the Mocs a match-point try at 24-22. Peele, though, came up with a crticial score and a setting error on Huff forced the Mocs into a timeout and the match into overtime.
Barnes regained the advantage for Chattanooga, but Peele came through for the 'Cats again to tie the set at 25. Kullak's strike put the Mocs back on top, and Barnes finally closed out the set and the match with a 27-25 win.
The Wildcats will continue their two-match Southern swing, with a 3 p.m. (EST) match at Samford Sunday.
