Box Score
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Senior middle blocker Kittery Neale totaled 15 kills and hit a team-high .414 to lead the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team to a five-set (25-21, 26-24, 17-25, 18-25, 15-5) win over the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs in non-conference action Tuesday night at Belk Arena.
Davidson improves to 7-11 overall, while Gardner-Webb drops to 4-14.
Neale added seven digs on the defensive end and captained the offensive attack with 16.5 points. Sophomore middle blocker Jorden Benedict turned in another strong performance, finishing with a match-high seven blocks along with seven digs and eight kills. Sophomore setter Anna Bradbury finished with 31 assists, splitting time with classmate Hayley Lawson, who had 17, and sophomore Jennifer Chamblee led the defense with 17 digs.
For the Bulldogs, Laura Wilcox collected 17 kills and nine digs, while hitting .316, and Tamia Herholz had 11 kills on 24 swings. Setter Regina Feagin tallied 39 assists, while Bethany Martin lead both teams with 18 digs.
In the opening set, neither team was able to take a lead, as the teams traded points deep into the set. Neale put away a set from Bradbury to knot the score at 20-20 and give the 'Cats possession, but the teams went back and forth to remain tied at 21-21. Back-to-back kills from Neale put the 'Cats up two, 23-21, and she served out the match, as the Wildcats forced three straight Bulldog hitting errors for a 25-21 win.
On the strength of Katie Matykowski's serving, Gardner-Webb won five straight points to open up a 13-7 lead in the second set. The Wildcats erased that deficit with an 11-6 run to tie the score at 18-18, and the teams stayed until Neale finally put the 'Cats up 25-24 for a set-point chance. Freshman Ally Miller capitalized on the opportunity, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the match with the 26-24 win.
In the third set, the Bulldogs turned an early 10-5 lead into a 25-17 win to prevent the Wildcats' sweep, and kept rolling into the fourth set. The Wildcats led 12-10 in that set when Gardner-Webb opened a 21-14 lead on a 9-4 run, keeping the match alive with a 25-18 win.
Davidson regrouped in the fifth and decisive set, as sophomore outside hitter Sarabeth Peele served a pair of scores to give the 'Cats a slight 6-4 edge and force the Bulldogs into a timeout. Peele's serve held up for three more points, pushing that lead to 9-4, and once freshman Madison Benedict regained possession, Chamblee served out the match with a 5-0 run to secure the match with a 15-5 victory.
The Wildcats will return to Southern Conference action this weekend, traveling to Appalachian State for a 7 p.m. contest Saturday and continuing to Western Carolina for a 2 p.m. match Sunday.
