Box Score

BOONE, N.C. --  The Davidson Wildcat volleyball team picked up its third straight win with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-21) triumph over the Appalachian State Mountaineers Saturday night in Southern Conference action.

With their third win in a week, the Wildcats improve to 8-11 overall and an even 3-3 in the conference. Appalachian drops to 4-15 overall and remains winless in the league at 0-5.

Sophomore outside hitter Sarabeth Peele paced the Wildcat offense with 14 kills and seven digs, and classmate Hayley Lawson ably managed the game, finishing with 32 assists. Sophomore libero Jennifer Chamblee anchored the defense with 15 digs.

Carla Durham led the way for the Mountaineers, finishing with 11 kills on 18 attacks. Charissa Clearman posted 20 assists, and Heather Kale had 13 digs.

The Mountaineers won the first pair of points to open the match and set the tone early. Davidson won the next two points, and took a slight 4-2 lead, but Appalachian State would go up 7-4 off a four-point serve from Lauren Swecker. The Mountaineers held the lead until a putaway from freshman Christine Perzinski tied the score, 10-10, but Swecker gave her team the lead and possession once again. The 'Cats tied the score three times before finally taking a lead at 14-14 on back-to-back kills from Peele. A third straight score, one of nine in the match from senior middle blocker Kittery Neale, gave the 'Cats a two-point cushion, and with a 19-16 advantage, sophomore Anna Bradbury served six straight points to finish out the set for the 25-16 win.

The second set played out much the same, with the Mountaineers jumping out to an early lead and holding until mid-way through the set. The Wildcats knotted the score at 8-8 on Chamblee's ace, but would not go ahead until 10-9 on a Mountaineer hitting error. Davidson won the next four points to pull ahead 14-10, but Appalachian tied the set at 15 behind a 5-1 run. Consecutive kills by Neale and Perzinski put the 'Cats back up a pair, but Durham won the next two to even the score once again, 17-17. Davidson never let the Mountaineers take the lead, but ASU wouldn't go quietly, tying the set at 23-23 on three straight Wildcat errors. The 'Cats, though, regrouped and took the set with a pair of putaways from Peele and Benedict to go up 2-0 with the 25-23 win.

For a third straight set, the Mountaineers took the early lead and Davidson was forced to play from behind, but the 'Cats also managed to do so for a third straight set. The Mountaineers, trying to avoid the sweep, won the first three points of the set and pushed their lead to 7-3 early. Appalachian stayed ahead until the middle of the set, when Perzinski's score tied the score at 16. The Mountaineers, though, won the next point, and the teams would trade possessions for the next several plays. Davidson finally broke through at 20-20 on Peele's arm strength, and Perzinski aced her serve to give the 'Cats a two-point window. Bradbury continued to prove herself a serving threat, putting up a pair of points to push the lead to 24-20. The Mountaineers survived a match point, but freshman Madison Benedict punched the game-winner for the 25-21 win.

Davidson will continue its two-match road trip with a 2 p.m. contest at SoCon foe Western Carolina tomorrow.
