Box Score

CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Sophomore outside hitter Sarabeth Peele posted 13 kills and hit .429 to lead the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team to a fourth straight win and a perfect weekend with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-21) sweep of Western Carolina Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference action.

With its second consecutive sweep of a conference opponent, Davidson improves to 9-11 and 4-3 in the league, while Western drops to 3-7 overall and 1-6 in the SoCon.

Senior middle blocker Kittery Neale and freshman middle blocker Madison Benedict each had eight kills, and sophomore setter Hayley Lawson had 42 assists. Classmate Jennifer Chamblee once again led the Wildcat defense with 13 digs.

Carrie Minogue was the lone hitter for Western Carolina in double-digits, collecting 11 kills. Setter Katie Hennessey had 20 assists, and Liz Rondone made 12 digs.

The Wildcats opened the match in a 3-0 hole, but used a 3-0 run of their own to knot the score. Davidson took the lead on a 4-1 run, behind strong serving from Erin Lupfer, to pull ahead 7-4. But the 'Cats couldn't stay ahead, as Western rode an 8-2 run to pull ahead 14-12. Kills from sophomore Jorden Benedict and freshman Jessica McAlvany put the 'Cats back in the game, and Lupfer served three straight scores to lift Davidson to an 18-15 edge. Western would manage to tie the score at 19 on back-to-back kills, but sophomore Anna Bradbury served four points to put Davidson up 24-19 and Peele punched the game-winner in the 25-21 win.

In the second set, the Wildcats took an early 8-2 lead, on good serving from freshman Christine Perzinski and a pair of putaways from Neale, and played side-out volleyball successfully to take a 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-18 win.

The third and final set was much closer, with the teams' score tied as late as 16-16. With Lawson serving, three straight Catamount hitting errors helped the 'Cats to a 19-16 advantage, which they would extend to 24-17 with a 5-1 run. Western survived four match points, but Peele sealed the victory with her 13th kill of the match.

The Wildcats will return to Belk Arena, hosting UNC Greensboro in a conference match Friday, Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m. The men's and women's basketball kickoff event, "A Night with the 'Cats," will follow.
