Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Sophomore outside hitter Sarabeth Peele, senior middle blocker Kittery Neale and freshman middle blocker Jorden Benedict led the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 25-21) Southern Conference win over Furman at Alley Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

Peele led the Wildcat offense with a team-high 15 kills, while Neale and Benedict added 11 and 10, respectively. Neale hit a team-best .500, collecting her 11 kills on just 20 attacks with a lone error, as the Wildcats as a team hit .250, better than the Paladins' .206 percentage. Sophomore setter Hayley Lawson tallied 41 assists, while classmate Jennifer Chamblee controlled the defensive effort with 20 digs.

For the Paladins, Kelly Kirby and Nicole Palazzo led the way, amassing 17 and 16 kills, respectively. Setter Kelsey Salava had 40 assists and a pair of players carried the defensive load with Brooke Ellison (14) and Allison West (15) in double figures for digs. West also had five aces.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 11-13 overall and 6-5 in the league, while Furman drops to 13-10 overall and 6-4 in conference play.

To open the match, Neale and Peele gave the 'Cats a 2-0 lead, which they would hold until 10-7, when Furman evened the score with three straight scores. Sophomore Jorden Benedict put the 'Cats back on top, but Alexis Shaffer tied the set again at 11-11. Davidson forced two consecutive errors and would play side-out volleyball to take a 1-0 lead in the match with the 25-23 win.

The second game was again tightly contested, though Davidson led as much as 9-5 early behind the strong serving of Neale. The Paladins knotted the set at 12-12 with a 7-3 stretch, and things would go down to the wire from there. Davidson, though, regained the lead with a Kirby service error and a Madison Benedict putaway for a 16-14 margin, and the 'Cats would hold once again for a 25-23 win to take control, 2-0, in the match.

After the break, the Paladins opened a 12-6 lead midway through the third set, enough to outlast the Wildcats for a 25-17 win to extend the match. Davidson, though, answered in the fourth set, jumping out to a 10-4 lead behind a 7-0 run on the serving of freshman Christine Perzinski. In dramatic fashion, the Paladins rallied to tie the set at 15-15 with an 8-0 run of their own, but the elder Benedict put her Wildcats on top for good. And though Furman would fight for their life for the duration, tying the score at 17-17, the Wildcats put the match away with a 4-0 run and a 25-21 win in the set.

The Wildcats will finish their weeknd on the road with a 2 p.m. contest at Wofford tomorrow afternoon.
