Double-double Efforts from Neale and Peele not Enough in 3-1 Loss at Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Senior middle blocker Kittery Neale and sophomore outside hitter Sarabeth Peele each posted double-doubles for the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team in a 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 25-19, 12-25) losing effort at Wofford's Ben Johnson Arena Sunday afternoon.
Neale tallied 17 kills and 12 digs, while hitting a team-high .441. Peele had 10 kills and 10 digs. Davidson dropped to 11-14 overall and an even 6-6 in Southern Conference play.
Wofford, who improved to 14-12 overall and 4-7 in the league, had three players in double figures, led by Shanna Hughes' 17 kills. Lindsey Richardson and Stacy Bryd had 11 and 10 kills, respectively, for the Terriers. Brittany Thompson totaled a match-high 30 digs to lead the defense.
The Terriers took an 8-4 lead in the first set, opening the match with a 7-2 run that forced the Wildcats into a timeout. Davidson would close the gap to just a couple of points, 14-12, but the Terriers got some distance with a 3-0 run. After another Wildcat break, Wofford closed out the 25-18 win with an 8-6 stretch.
The second set was tied at 4-4 when Sarah Palmer served four straight scores to give the Terriers another early 8-4 lead. Wofford extended its lead to 14-7 midway through the set, and though the Wildcats would get the score knotted behind a 11-4 rally, the Terriers took a 23-18 lead with a 5-0 run. With the 25-19 win, the Terriers would go ahead 2-0 in the match.
The teams battled and traded possessions in the third set, with the score tied at 14-14 when Wofford took a two-point lead, trying to complete the sweep. Davidson answered with a 7-0 run behind strong serving from sophomore Anna Bradbury and three kills from Neale, jumping out to a 22-17 lead and forcing another set with the 25-19 win.
Wofford controlled the fourth set, leading by as much as 21-9, and won the match with the 25-12 win.
The Wildcats will play their final pair of regular-season road matches next weekend, traveling to Chattanooga and Samford, before finishing the regular season with a four-match homestand.
