Second Season
Winthrop '07

Emily Carrara joined the staff of the Davidson Wildcats in June of 2012, coming to Davidson after two seasons as an assistant coach at nearby Queens University.  Carrara works tirelessly on recruiting efforts, as well as on-court direction of the setters and blocking schemes.

Under her guidance, setter Ariel Ley finished eight on the program’s all-time assists list with 2,321 in her career. The Wildcats also improved their blocking, posting 197 total blocks in 2012, 30 more than they had in 2011.

While at Queens, Carrara was in charge of recruiting and strength and conditioning for the Royals in addition to on-court training and personnel development. Queens won a program-record 23 games with just nine losses in 2011, earning their first ever bid to the Conference Carolinas Championship game.

A member of the coaching staff for the Carolinas Junior Volleyball Club, she serves as the head coach for the club’s traveling 16s team as well as the non-traveling squad.  Carrara also spent one season as the head coach at South Mecklenburg High School.

Carrara was a four-year letterwinner and three-time captain at Winthrop University, leading the Eagles to four consecutive Big South Conference Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances.  She earned a spot on the Big South’s All-Freshman team in 2003 and the all-conference second team in 2003, 2004 and 2006.   Carrara also excelled in the classroom, earning a spot on the Big South All-Academic Team before being named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a senior in 2006.  She also won the American Legion Award and was Winthrop’s nominee for Woman of the Year in 2006.   Carrara majored in political science with a minor in Spanish and social sciences at Winthrop, graduating in 2007 with a 3.68 GPA.

Formerly Emily Heckl, she is married to former Winthrop baseball player Chris Carrara.
