ARLINGTON, Va. — Cooper Cavanaugh struck out a career-best 11, Fredy Diaz homered and Davidson held off a late George Washington rally in a 5-4 win Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field.
The victory secured the fifth straight Atlantic 10 series win for the Wildcats, who improved to 22-18 overall and 13-7 in the league. Davidson has also won nine of its last 10 A-10 games.
Cavanaugh tossed six innings and allowed two hits and one earned run. The lefty struck out the side in order in the second and third innings and extended his streak to seven straight strikeouts in the fourth. Cavanaugh overtook his previous high of nine strikeouts, which he notched in 4.2 innings of his college debut against Morehead State in 2024.
The Wildcats got the edge on the scoreboard by breaking a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth, after the Revolutionaries (17-24, 9-11) overcame a 4-0 deficit. In the ninth, Matthew Vannoy doubled and advanced to third on Anthony Torreso's single. Then, with two outs and the bases loaded, he scored when Matt Manjooran reached on an error.
Diaz hit a solo home run, his second of the season, in a three-run second inning, which also featured a Cooper Collins sacrifice fly. The Wildcats made it 4-0 with a Torreso sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Brycen Champey replaced Cavanaugh in the seventh, and threw the next 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and three earned runs.
Carson Taggart came on in the ninth with runners on the corners and two outs and earned a one-pitch save, forcing a popup to end it.
