Perkins Tosses Complete Game as 'Cats Top Spiders 6-1

4/19/2024 9:27:00 PM | Baseball

DAVIDSON — Davidson right-hander Wilson Perkins tossed a complete-game gem, and Wildcats Jake Wilhoit and Noah Jouras homered as Davidson topped Richmond 6-1 in the teams' series opener Friday night at Wilson Field.

It's the first complete-game effort by a Davidson pitcher in almost two years and snapped a seven-game skid for the Wildcats, who improved to 15-21 and 3-7 in the Atlantic 10. Perkins said he just wanted to deliver for his teammates as the front-line starter.

"I love all 40 of our guys, and I'd do anything for them," said Perkins, who improved to 4-3. "This one was personal."

Blake Hely, who was in Friday's crowd, had the Wildcats' most recent complete game in a 6-0 win at Saint Joseph's on May 13, 2022.

Perkins threw 110 pitches, scattered nine hits, allowed one earned run and struck out seven, including two in the eighth. He had 1-2-3 innings in the second and fourth and faced a high of five batters in the first and the ninth.

"I did a better job tonight just hitting my spots throughout the game," he said. "I put myself in advantage counts, and they put balls in play hard, but they hit it at guys, so I was very fortunate there."

Ironically, the Spiders (16-22, 6-4) struck quickly Friday. Perkins hit Aaron Whitley, the game's first hitter, and Whitley scored two batters later on a DJ Pacheco single. But from there, the Spiders didn't get a runner past second base.

Meanwhile, Davidson wasted little time getting on the board, too. Wilhoit launched a home run to left field in the second, and Jouras blasted one to left in the third to make it 2-1.

Michael O'Shaughnessy then added an RBI-double to right-center in the sixth, and after Jacob Friend's sacrifice fly plated a run in the seventh, O'Shaughnessy drove in two more with a double to left-center.

Then it was up to Perkins to close the door. He wrapped up the eighth with a strikeout and an emotional mound exit, then fought through the ninth and closed the game with a flyout to Cider Canon in right. Admittedly, his adrenaline was pumping.

"It's hot, and you just gotta be gritty," said Perkins. "You just gotta compete through it. Everybody's tired in the eighth and ninth, so you just gotta execute."
