DAVIDSON — Cooper Cavanaugh tossed a gem and three Davidson Wildcats homered in a 14-3 win over Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's Friday afternoon at Wilson Field.
With their sixth win in the last seven contests, the Wildcats improved to 13-13 overall and 2-0 in the A-10 and clinched at least their third series victory of the season.
The Wildcats took the lead with a three-run sixth, then added four runs in the seventh and put the game away with six runs in the eighth.
Jack Cotrone went 4-for-5 with a solo home run in the eighth, and his two-RBI single in the sixth broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Wildcats the lead for good.
Michael O'Shaughnessy was 3-for-4 with six RBIs, including a grand slam to make it 12-2 in the eighth. He also had an RBI-double in the first and an RBI-single in the seventh.
Eli Putnam, whose walk-off single delivered Friday's 9-8 series-opening win, was 3-for-5, and his two-run home run to left extended the lead to 6-2 in the seventh. Putnam and O'Shaughnessy now lead the team with six home runs apiece.
Nick Calero drove in runs on sacrifice flies in the sixth and eighth, while Cider Canon had two hits, Jake Wilhoit tripled and Jacob Friend walked three times.
Cavanaugh, meanwhile, kept the Hawks at bay while earning his first win. He tossed six innings, allowed four hits and two earned runs, walked three and struck out four.
Isaac Fix took it the rest of way to get his first save, navigating the final three frames while allowing three hits and one run, walking one and striking out four.
