Baseball Tops Rival Charlotte 9-3 in Kannapolis

KANNAPOLIS — Davidson used a five-run sixth inning to push past the rival Charlotte 49ers 9-3 Tuesday night at Atrium Health Ballpark, home of the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers.
Davidson improved to 8-12 while earning a season split with the 49ers, and the win is the 150th of head coach Rucker Taylor's career (150-98, .605).
Davidson also improved to 3-0 all-time at Atrium Health Ballpark, following wins over Wofford (2021) and Western Carolina (2023).
Catcher Noah Jouras led the offense with three hits, including two triples, and he drove in three runs. One of those RBI-triples came in the decisive sixth inning, when the Wildcats also got a two-run double from Aidan Rice and benefited from two walks, two hit-by-pitches and a wild pitch.
In the seventh, Jouras hit his second RBI-triple, and Jack Cotrone added an RBI-single to make it 9-2.
Jouras also drove in the game's first run in the fourth when he singled in Nick Calero (double). Michael O'Shaughnessy added an RBI-single in the fifth to give Davidson a 2-1 lead.
Starter Isaac Fix held the 49ers scoreless in his three innings of work. He allowed one hit, walked four and struck out three.
Thomas Whelan threw 2.2 innings, allowed one hit and one earned run, struck out three and earned his first career win.
Brycen Champey entered in a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the eighth and recorded the final four outs.
