3/16/2024 8:30:00 PM | Baseball

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — Playing its first road series of the season, the Davidson baseball team went 1-1 in Saturday's doubleheader at Tennessee Tech, earning a 6-4 win and falling 12-2.

The series finale is set for 2 p.m. (EST) on Sunday.

Game 1
Davidson rallied from a two-run, ninth-inning deficit, then got a two-RBI single from Hunter Anderson in the 10th to win the series opener 6-4.

Anderson and Eli Putnam hit solo home runs in the ninth to pull the Wildcats even, and with the scored tied at 4-4 in the 10th, Anderson singled in Nick Calero and Noah Jouras to push them ahead. Then pitcher Matt Weber closed the door in the bottom of the inning, despite the Golden Eagles loading the bases.

Anderson's pinch-hit solo home run led off the ninth, and Putnam hit his team-leading fifth with two outs and facing a 1-2 count.

A Putnam RBI-single in the fifth gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead before TTU's Tanner Shiver hit a three-run shot in the eighth.

A Calero sacrifice fly drove in the game's first run in the fourth.

Jouras tripled in the second and joined Anderson and Putnam with multiple hits.

Pitcher Wilson Perkins turned in his best start to date, tossing seven innings and allowing seven hits and one earned run. He struck out six.

Weber pitched the final three innings and improved to 2-0.

Game 2
TTU scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to turn a close game into a 12-2 victory and induce the 10-run mercy rule.

TTU hit three solo home runs early and led 3-0 in the sixth before Michael O'Shaughnessy hit his own solo shot to get the Wildcats on the board. The blast to right-center was his fifth of the year, tying him with Putnam for the team lead. O'Shaughnessy finished 3-for-3, while Calero had two hits.

Jack Cotrone added a solo home run, his first of the year, in the top of the seventh, making it 5-2.

Starter Cooper Cavanaugh (0-3) threw five innings, allowing three earned runs and three hits and striking out three.
