DAYTON, Ohio – The Davidson College men's soccer team went toe-to-toe with the No. 5-ranked team in the country, the Dayton Flyers, in the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals at Baujan Field on Saturday night.
The final 300 seconds of the game was a whirlwind, but the Flyers were able to break the seal on an otherwise career-night from goalkeeper Lucas Beltran.
With a little over five minutes remaining in the second half, Dayton brought back on the three-time A-10 Rookie of the Week, Andrew Armstrong. Not long after, in the 87th minute, the Flyers earned a corner on the near side. Off the delivery, a scrum erupted at the far post, and Armstrong was able to find the ball and head it in from close range.
Still with time left, Davidson put together a last gasp of possession by driving the ball deep in Flyer territory. With 30 ticks left, Vincent Bennage was tripped while making a cut to receive a pass in the box and fell to grass. But no call was made.
Beltran was spectacular between the pipes for the Wildcats. The sophomore from Encinitas, California made a career-high nine saves in his first postseason start. He had four stops in the first half and five in the final 45.
Davidson ends the year 6-7-5 overall.
