Late Rally Pushes VCU Past 'Cats In Series Opener
4/8/2022 5:33:00 PM | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. — A five-run third inning put the Davidson Wildcats in position to win at VCU Friday afternoon, but the Rams rallied late to win 7-6 and give the Wildcats their first Atlantic 10 blemish.
The Wildcats fall to 22-6 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Rams, the league's preseason favorite, are also 3-1 in the A-10.
Michael Carico hit his team-leading ninth home run, a two-run shot to right, in the third to put the Wildcats ahead 3-2. Then Ryan Wilson added his own two-run shot, this one to center, to make it 5-2. It was Wilson's sixth homer of the year, and the first baseman added an RBI-double in the fifth to make it 6-4, a lead the Wildcats held for three innings.
The difference Friday came in the ninth when Will Carlone's RBI-single to center scored Logan Amiss from second.
Davidson starter Nolan DeVos threw five innings, allowing four hits and four earned runs and striking out three in a no-decision.
In his third plate appearance, Carico tied the program's single-season hit-by-pitch record. Hit for the 17th time, he tied the mark set by Matt Frey in 2019 and matched by Wilson last spring.
Wilson, Jacob Hinderleider and Trevor Candelaria had two hits apiece, and John Hosmer's sacrifice fly in the third drove in Davidson's first run of the day.
