RICHMOND, Va. — Blake Hely carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning, and Parker Nolan hit his seventh home run of the season to lead Davidson to a 7-2 win over VCU Saturday afternoon at The Diamond.
The Wildcats improved to 23-6 overall and 4-1 in the A-10, while the Rams (16-13) dropped to 3-2 in league play.
Hely, a senior right-hander, didn't surrender a hit until Michael Haydak singled to right in the eighth inning. He tossed seven-plus innings, allowing one hit and one earned run, while walking two, striking out eight and improving to 4-0.
He got a boost from the Wildcat bats in the fifth, when Nolan hit a three-run shot to center, driving in John Hosmer (walk) and Trevor Candelaria (single). Ryan Wilson then stole home, while Henry Koehler snatched second, to make it a four-run frame.
Koehler's RBI-single in the seventh made it 5-0, and after the Rams pulled within three runs, Jacob Hinderleider helped the Wildcats seal it with a two-run double in the top of the ninth. Hinderleider finished 3-for-5 with two doubles to lead the Wildcats, while Candelaria and Koehler had two hits each.
Bennett Flynn took over for Hely with two on in the seventh and recorded the final six outs, two by strikeout
