Wildcats Win 7-2 Again, Take A-10 Series at VCU

4/10/2022 4:45:00 PM | Baseball

RICHMOND, Va. — Ryan Feczko set the tone on the mound, and Parker Nolan's two-run triple highlighted a five-run fifth inning Sunday as the Davidson Wildcats defeated VCU 7-2 at The Diamond for the second straight day.

The win is the Wildcats' fifth in the last six outings, as they improved to 24-6 overall and 5-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Rams (16-14) dropped to 3-3 in league play.

Additionally, it's the seventh series win of the season for the Wildcats, who have yet to do less than splitting a four-game set with Columbia.

"We played well this weekend," said Davidson coach Rucker Taylor. "Our starting pitching and defense put us in good positions throughout, and we were able to have good at-bats within the lineup. This team has been disciplined and playing with consistency."

The Wildcats' fifth inning included five hits and two Ram errors, and Trevor Candelaria's RBI-single broke a 1-1 tie. Nolan followed with his triple to right-center, scoring Candelaria and Michael Carico, and Ryan Wilson's RBI-double to left scored Nolan to make it 5-1. The final run of the inning came in on Jacob Hinderleider's fielder's choice.

Hinderleider drove in the game's first run Sunday with a sacrifice fly in the second, and John Hosmer's eighth-inning RBI-double down the left field line ended the scoring.

Wilson led the offense with a 3-for-4 day, while Hinderleider and Hosmer had two hits apiece. Carico led off the game with his 18th hit-by-pitch of the season, which sets a single-season program record.

Lefty Feczko improved to 7-0 with another effective outing. He threw 5.2 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run, walking three and striking out three. Alex Fenton took over with one out to secure in the sixth and recorded the next four outs, two via strikeout. Then Gabe Levy held the Rams hitless and scoreless in the eighth and ninth, while striking out four.
