Baseball Opens UNCG Series Friday at Home

3/24/2022 3:59:00 PM | Baseball

The Davidson baseball team will play at home, on the road and in a pro park this weekend when it clashes with UNC Greensboro.

The Wildcats, 17-3, have won their last nine games, which is tied for the fourth longest active streak in the country.

Davidson will host Friday's series opener at Wilson Field, beginning at 6 p.m. The teams will then play at UNCG Saturday at 3 p.m. and play a neutral site game (with UNCG as host) Sunday at 2 p.m. at Truist Point, home of the High Point Rockers of the independent Atlantic League.

Saturday marks the Wildcats' first game away from Wilson Field this season after two neutral site games were postponed due to weather.

The meeting with the Spartans, who play in the Southern Conference, will be the 65th overall and the first for the former league foes since 2014, Davidson's final season in the SoCon.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
UNCG is 10-11 and coming off a 9-8 loss to High Point Thursday, in which the Spartans scored three runs in a ninth-inning rally.

UNCG is led at the plate by Hogan Windish and Greg Hardison, who each hit .397. Windish is the team leader with four home runs and is tied with Kennedy Jones (.350, 3 HRs) for the team lead with 22 RBIs.

LAST TIME OUT
Rained out against Charlotte Wednesday, the Wildcats have been idle since sweeping Lafayette last weekend at Wilson Field.

The 10-1, 13-2 and 14-9 victories secured Davidson's third three-game series sweep of the season, following Bryant and Norfolk State. It was also the Wildcats' fourth series win (also Lehigh).

IN THE RANKINGS
Davidson first baseman Ryan Wilson, twice named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, leads the country with a .622 on-base percentage. He also leads the conference with 25 runs scored and with 23 walks (4th nationally).

Fellow sophomore Michael Carico, Davidson's primary catcher, ranks only behind Wilson in the league and is fifth nationally with a .562 on-base percentage. He's the league leader with 12 hit-by-pitches (2nd nationally) and with 10 doubles.

Jake Wilhoit is the A-10 leader with three sacrifice flies.

On the mound, Friday starter Nolan DeVos is the conference leader with an 0.60 ERA (7th nationally), 15.0 strikeouts per nine innings and an 0.80 WHIP. He's tied for the A-10 lead with four wins, alongside teammate Ryan Feczko.

Feczko is first in the league (8th nationally) with a 16.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 0.76 walks per nine innings (10th nationally).

Gabe Levy's five saves lead the A-10.

EFFICIENT EFFORT
Through 20 games, the Davidson pitching staff has found the strike zone and avoided bats. The numbers show it.

The Wildcats have a 2.88 team ERA, which is best in the A-10 and 10th in the country.

The Wildcats rank third nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.64) and fourth in WHIP (1.01) and walks per nine innings (2.46).
