NEWARK, Del. – Despite Sam Mennenga's third 20-point outing of the season, Davidson fell at Delaware, 69-67, in non-conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon from inside the Bob Carpenter Center.
The setback drops the Wildcats to 6-3 overall, while the Blue Hens improve to 4-4.
Mennenga, one of four Davidson players in double figures, scored 20 points, finished 9-of-16 from the floor and grabbed nine rebounds. Connor Kochera added a season-high 17 points, while Reed Bailey and Desmond Watson scored 10 each.
Foster Loyer, who entered as the nation's fourth leading scorer, had just 8 points for the Wildcats, but contributed 7 assists, 5 boards and 4 steals in 37 minutes.
Delaware, which shot 50 percent in the first half, grabbed the lead for good with an early 12-2 run and would later close the period with a 10-2 spurt to take a 34-23 advantage at intermission.
The 'Cats got to within three, 40-37, on a Menennga layup at the 12:57 mark, but the Blue Hens stretched the margin back to double figures.
Facing its largest deficit of the game, 61-47, with 4:57 remaining, Davidson slowly chipped away eventually making it a one possession game in the closing seconds.
After the Blue Hens came up empty at the free-throw line a second straight trip, the Wildcats had one last chance to tie or win the game, but Loyer's 3-point attempt was unsuccessful.
Like Davidson, Delaware placed four in double digits, led by Jyare Davis' 25-point performance on 12-of-19 shooting.
