'Cats Host Colonials at Wilson This Weekend
4/22/2021 3:27:00 PM | Baseball
The Davidson baseball team returns to Wilson Field Friday night, when Atlantic 10 foe George Washington visits for a four-game weekend series.
The Wildcats are 19-14 overall and 3-5 in the A-10 after dropping four games at VCU last weekend. They're 16-1 at Wilson, and their home winning streak reached 21 games until Dayton avoided a weekend series sweep with an April 11 win.
"We're looking forward to getting back on the field and playing a GWU team that is playing well," said Davidson coach Rucker Taylor. "They are swinging the bats, and this should be a good challenge. There is a chance of rain impacting the weekend, so we'll have to have some flexibility, but turf and lights should make it manageable."
The Colonials (13-9, 3-1) are coming off an 8-4 win over Towson Wednesday.
The Wildcats took two of three games in the teams' 2019 series in Washington, D.C.
League Leaders
• Davidson and Dayton lead the A-10 with 44 home runs, and three Wildcats rank among the individual leaders. John Hosmer's nine homers ranks third in the league, while Trevor Candelaria and Ruben Fontes are tied for fourth with eight apiece.
• Alex Fedje-Johnson is tied for third in doubles (11) and ranks fifth in walks (22) and tied for fifth in hit-by-pitches (8). He leads Davidson with a .322 average and an on-base percentage of .453.
• Ryan Wilson is tied for second in the league with 13 HBPs and tied for sixth with nine stolen bases.
• On the mound, Blake Hely and Gabe Levy have earned four wins apiece, second-best in the league. They also rank 5-6 in strikeouts, with 50 and 47, respectively.
Nolan DeVos is the league leader with seven saves.
'Cats Launch "K's for Kids" With Dream On 3
This weekend's series also marks the beginning of the team's partnership with Dream On 3, an organization that helps sports dreams come true for kids with life-altering conditions.
Through the "K's for Kids" campaign, the Wildcats will raise money for the VIP Dream Experience for Dream Kid Sean, a Davidson fan who lives with Autism. To help, fans can pledge to donate money for every strikeout the Wildcat pitchers record.
"We're excited to formally start our partnership with Dream On 3," said Taylor. "Leesa Bain, who's the mom of Rob Bain (2015 grad), has been wonderful from the Dream On 3 side, and it's great to have a familiar face helping us. A few of our guys have been involved with the organization, and Dick Cooke is on their advisory board. We believe this is something we can build off of moving forward and hope that Sean and his family enjoy the games."
