'Cats Win Series Opener 8-4 Over North Alabama
4/1/2021 10:24:00 PM | Baseball
Ruben Fontes hit his fifth home run of the season early, and Nolan DeVos once again ended a late threat as Davidson won its series opener 8-4 against North Alabama Thursday night at Wilson Field.
Â
It's the Wildcats' fifth straight victory and ninth in their last 10 games. They've also won 16 straight games at home, dating to last year.
Â
"We were able to get some early runs against a pitcher with good numbers coming in and then bookended things late with a couple of runs in the eighth," said coach Rucker Taylor. "Bennett Flynn and Nolan both got us out of jams and kept crooked numbers off the board."
Â
Davidson took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, after John Hosmer doubled and a fielding error allowed Alex Fedje-Johnson to score. Fontes then hit his third homer in six games to bring in Hosmer and tie him for the team's home run lead.
Â
Ryan Wilson drove in two runs on a second-inning single to center to make it 5-1, and Garrett Browder's RBI-single made it 6-4 in the sixth after the Lions had climbed to within a run.
Â
The Wildcats' eighth-inning runs came on bases-loaded walks by Wilson and Hosmer. Â
The combo of Flynn and DeVos recorded the final five outs, with DeVos earning his fifth save and third in five days.Â

The series continues Friday with a 5:30 p.m. game at Wilson Field.
