DAVIDSON — Jacob Walker threw five innings in his Davidson debut, and the Wildcats' offense rode a four-run fourth inning to a 7-3 victory over N.C. Central Wednesday night at Wilson Field.
Â
Walker, a 6-7 junior right-hander, allowed four hits and one run and struck out two in his first outing since transferring from Arizona's Scottsdale Community College.
Â
"Jacob set the tone and gave us a great start," said coach Rucker Taylor.
Â
Walker said it was good to get a team win, and he felt comfortable on the mound in a Wildcats' uniform. He's felt that way since moving across the country to join the program.
Â
"It's been a really easy transition because there's great people here," he said.
Â
Walker had run support quickly, as Trevor Candelaria hit an RBI-double to left in the first inning. After the Eagles evened it at 1-1 with a solo home run by Luis DeLeon in the fourth, the Wildcats answered with four runs on two hits and two errors.
Â
Jacob Hinderleider drove in two on a double over first base, following a bases loaded balk, and Garrett Browder's sacrifice fly to center made it 5-1.
Â
"Trevor and Garrett had big two-strike swings," said Taylor. "We were able to do some things with the short game which was a big factor in things tonight."Â
Â
The Wildcats extended their lead to 7-1 in the sixth on a Browder two-RBI single to left.
Â
The Eagles threatened in the eighth, cutting the margin to 7-3 with the help of two Davidson errors. Freshman pitcher Bennett Flynn entered with two outs, the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate and recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
Â
He then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth while earning his first career save.
Â
In all, the Wildcats used six pitchers, with senior Jaret LaCagnina and freshmen Ryan Kutz and Eddie Shores making their season debuts.
Â
"Jaret and Bennett worked ahead and were big for us tonight out of the 'pen," said Taylor. "Ryan pitched well in his first college appearance; we just didn't make some plays behind him."Â
