KINGSTON, R.I. – Carter Collins recorded his second 20-point outing in the last three contests with a game-high 22 points to lead Davidson past Rhode Island, 67-58, in both teams' Atlantic 10 opener Friday at The Ryan Center.
One of four Wildcats in double figures, Collins finished 8-of-14 from the floor, including three of his club's 10 3-pointers. Hyunjung Lee added 16 points, while Kellan Grady and Luka Brajkovic scored 11 and 10, respectively.
Deadlocked at 39-39, Davidson (4-3, 1-0 A-10) grabbed control with a 13-0 streak to take its largest lead, 52-39. In addition to their game-changing spurt, the 'Cats held Rhode Island scoreless for almost seven minutes.
The Rams responded with eight straight of their own to cut the deficit to 54-51 with 3:27 left, but that's as close as they would get as Davidson pushed the margin back to double figures with a 12-4 run.
Off the bench, senior Bates Jones pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds in 25 minutes for Davidson, which held a 42-36 advantage on glass.
Collins and Lee combined for 26 of the Wildcats' 32 first-half points, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer from the South Korean guard to give Davidson a 32-28 lead the break.
After Rhode Island (3-5, 0-1 A-10) started 7-of-8 from the floor and led 23-20 at the 8:58 mark, the 'Cats closed on a 12-5 spurt highlighted by Lee's third trey of the period.
Malik Martin paced Rhody with 20 points, while Davidson limited preseason all-conference selection Fatts Russell to just 5 points.
Up Next
Davidson will conclude non-conference play Tuesday with a 7 p.m. tip against Vanderbilt inside John M. Belk Arena.
