The Davidson baseball team will play its final non-conference game of the season Tuesday when it visits Wake Forest.
Â
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at David F. Couch Ballpark in Winston-Salem.
Â
The Wildcats (23-19) most recently split an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader at UMass, with both teams registering 2-1 wins. Sunday's series finale was canceled because of rain.
Â
Wake Forest (27-20) has been idle since a 7-5 loss at High Point May 1.
Â
Â
Levy gets weekly honor
Freshman pitcher Gabe Levy was named A-10 Rookie of the Week on Monday.
Â
The right-hander earned two saves last week, taking his season total to eight. In 18 appearances and 42 innings, he has a team-best 2.79 ERA, while holding opponents to a .219 average and striking out 42.
Â
Â
Mr. Consistent
Senior catcher/third baseman Eric Jones continues to set the standard at the plate. He is hitting a team-best .358 and also leads the Wildcats in on-base (.443) and slugging (.570) percentages. He has team-highs of 15 doubles and 21 multi-hit games.
Â
Jones has had three hits in seven games, including in Saturday's 2-1 win over UMass, when he drove in both Wildcat runs on his sixth home run of the season.
Â
Â
Â
Frey's streak at 37
Second baseman Matt Frey has reached base in 37 straight games.
Â
Last week, the junior from Murrysville, Pa., went 4-for-5 with two home runs against N.C. A&T. Then he earned walks in each game at UMass. He was also hit for the 15th time, which is one shy of the program's single-season record.
Â
The reached-base streak only includes base hits, walks and hit-by-pitches. It does not include the times batters reach by error or fielder's choice.
Â
Â
Fontes adds to lead
Designated hitter Ruben Fontes hit two home runs last week to push his season total to 12. That's the top mark in the A-10.
Â
Fontes' most recent home runs erased one-run deficits against N.C. A&T and UMass.
Davidson leads the A-10 with 52 homers and 1.24 per game.
Â
Â
Sutherland still near the top
Senior pitcher Casey Sutherland saw his streak of 24 innings without a walk come to an end over the weekend, but he still ranks among the nation's best.
Â
The right-hander from Apopka, Fla., is currently fourth in the country — and first in the A-10 — in walks per nine innings (0.70) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (10.40).
Â
In 64.2 innings, Sutherland is 6-1 with a 3.06 ERA, 52 strikeouts and five walks.
Â
Â
Up Next
The Wildcats' next tests will be in the classroom. Exams are beginning, and the Wildcats will return to action Thursday, May 16 with an A-10 doubleheader at St. Bonaventure.
