WINSTON-SALEM — Davidson hit three home runs and rallied to within a run late Tuesday night at Wake Forest, but the Demon Deacons hit a few round-trippers themselves and held on for an 11-8 victory at Couch Ballpark.

Trevor Candelaria, Eric Jones and Alex Mardiney added to their individual home run counts and helped Davidson, which has an Atlantic 10-best 55 homers, challenge an Atlantic Coast Conference foe as well.

Trailing 9-2 after seven innings, the Wildcats (23-20) scored six runs in the eighth. Jones led off the inning with his seventh homer of the season, and Alex Mardiney followed that right-center shot with his sixth on a dart down the right field line.

Zach Nussbaum and Ruben Fontes then drove in a run each on a single and double, respectively. Nussbaum later scored when Max Bazin reached on an error, and Fontes came around on a Candelaria sacrifice fly to left, cutting it to 9-8.

Candelaria's solo shot to left in the seventh was the fourth home run of his freshman season and cut the Deacons' lead to 7-2.

Wake (28-20) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-double by Bobby Seymour.

Davidson tied it at 1-1 in the fourth after Brett Centracchio singled and came around to score, sliding just in front of a tag, on Lebek's double to right center.

Wake pulled ahead 7-1 after hitting three home runs in a six-run fifth, highlighted by a three-run shot by Seymour. Shane Muntz and Bruce Steel followed with solo home runs to left.

Matt Frey led off the game with a first-pitch single to right and reached base for the 38th straight game.

Starter Josh Hudson (4-2) threw five innings in the loss.

Up Next
Exams are next for Davidson. The Wildcats are idle until May 16 when they return to Atlantic 10 play with a doubleheader at St. Bonaventure.
