AMHERST, Mass. — Ruben Fontes and Eric Jones hit home runs, and three Davidson pitchers had solid outings as the Wildcats split a doubleheader at UMass Saturday.
Â
Both games finished with 2-1 scores, with UMass winning the first game and Davidson the second.
Â
The Wildcats (23-19) are now 11-6 in A-10 play, while UMass (17-22) is 8-9.
Â
Jones' two-run home run to left in the third inning of the second game gave the Wildcats all the runs they needed to even the series. His sixth shot of the year came after Trevor Candelaria led off the inning with a single.
Â
Starter Allen Barry (6-1) threw seven innings, allowing four hits and one earned run and striking out seven. Gabe Levy struck out three over the final two innings to earn his eighth save.
Â
In the opener, A-10 home run leader Fontes homered for the second straight game. He hit his 12th shot of the season in the seventh inning to tie the game at 1-1 before UMass took the lead for good with an RBI-double by Eddy Hart in the bottom of the inning. Justin Lebek's fourth-inning single was the Wildcats' only other hit.
Â
Casey Sutherland (6-1) threw all eight innings, struck out three and allowed seven hits and two earned runs. The nation's leader in walks-per-nine-innings (0.48), he walked two batters, with his first-inning pass to Hart ending a streak of 24 straight innings without a walk.
Â
Five Wildcats were hit-by-pitches Saturday, including Lebek and Matt Frey. Lebek was hit for the fourth time this year, adding to his career program record (30), while Frey was hit for the 15th time, which is one shy of the program's single-season mark.
Frey, who also drew a walk in both games, has now extended his reached-base streak to 37 games.
