ARLINGTON, Va. — Matt Frey and Trevor Candelaria hit home runs to help Davidson get an early lead, and the Wildcats held on for a 6-5 win over George Washington Sunday at Barcroft Park.
Â
It's the third Atlantic 10 series victory for the Wildcats, who improved to 19-16 overall and 8-4 in league play.
Â
Hitting third in the order, Frey hit a solo shot to right in the first inning to provide a 1-0 lead. It's the third home run of the season for the junior second baseman and his second in a week.
Â
Candelaria, the Wildcats' freshman center fielder, then went deep with a three-run shot to left in the second after Justin Lebek singled and Max Bazin walked. Candelaria's third homer of the season made it 4-0, and a Frey groundout with the bases loaded made it 5-0 after Davidson had batted twice.
Â
After George Washington (22-18, 6-9) scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, Davidson extended its lead to 6-2 in the eighth when Bazin scored on a steal play. Â
Â
Senior starting pitcher Josh Hudson (4-1) threw 5.2 innings and struck out eight, while allowing five hits and two earned runs and walking three.
Â
Freshman Gabe Levy helped the Wildcats escape a jam in the seventh, weathered a three-run eighth and sat the Colonials down 1-2-3 in the ninth to earn his sixth save.
